Aboriginal culture

The roots of Australia’s Aboriginal culture stretch back many thousands of years, and exploring the connection is a potent source of wonder for the visitor.

Graham Clarke, Harry Nanya Tours

Aboriginal tourism is gathering momentum in NSW. Using their knowledge of the landscape, its plants and animals gained over thousands of years, Aboriginal Australians are playing an ever more prominent role in interpreting their country to the wider world, and the experience is amazing.

So different is the Aboriginal perspective and so intimate their store of knowledge that non-Aborigines often compare it to an awakening – as if they’re seeing the landscape through fresh eyes. It’s also multi faceted – encompassing artworks on a gallery wall, the strange tastes you’ll experience on a bushtucker tour and the stories you’ll hear when you tour the ancient sites of Lake Mungo.

For the traveller, experiencing the landscape from an Aboriginal perspective, with people who have absorbed it through the soles of their feet, brings another dimension to the experience.
