Why go there
Located 33 km from Jindabyne, Thredbo is a true year-round resort with just as many activities in summer as there are in winter. With its European-style lodges and accommodation, Thredbo has a genuine Northern Hemisphere alpine appeal. A chairlift, open year-round, takes visitors almost 600 metres into the mountains, from where it is an easy six km walk to the peak of Mount Kosciuszko.
History
The area was popular with graziers in the mid-19th century. Gold was discovered in the 1860s and the ski industry began in the late 1950s when a chairlift and lodges were built. This coincided with the creation of the Alpine Way which ran right into Thredbo and spurred on tourism.
